Those songs and artists everyone from Roger Miller to Erroll Garner to Peggy Lee always bring a smile to my face when I hear them so many years later. My dad couldn t hold a tune in a bucket, she laughed, but my mother always had music by Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Andy Williams, Roger Miller, the big bands and of course Lawrence Welk, playing in our house. My relatives are from the south, so we d have fiddle, guitar and piano playing for all of our family get togethers. (Desert Entertainer, CA)

If anything, Lewis's melodic accuracy and deadpan intensity has more in common with art song, think of lighter Poulenc chanson, than rock 'n' roll, something that both rolls back the bombast on tunes, such as Comfortably Numb (from Pink Floyd's The Wall), and neatly distills the romantic desolation of Lock, Stock and Teardrops (a 1963 hit for Roger Miller).
