Emmanuel Music gives spark to an odd coupling Nov 16, 2009
Emmanuel Music is devoting this season to Haydn and Schoenberg ... The piece ends with the women of the chorus singing the note C. Harbison held that final moment; then, with barely a pause, he brought the orchestra in on the same note: This was the opening of The Representation of Chaos, the harmonically adventurous prelude to Haydn s oratorio The Creation ... Haydn follows that picture of disorder with art of supreme order - a ceaselessly inventive portrayal of the wonders of both heaven and... (Boston Globe)

Stalin failed to suppress this humane radiance Nov 4, 2009
The Classical predates Stravinsky's neoclassical works and is nothing more than a brilliant, sometimes acerbic and always enjoyable attempt to recreate a symphony in the style of Haydn, with piquant modernist twists of rhythm, harmony and orchestration. Ashkenazy conducted the Fifth Symphony for the stirring, positive work it is, balancing moments of warm, radiant woodwind to bring out their human glow. (Sydney Morning Herald -- Entertainment)
The Shakespeare of Music Nov 4, 2009
Here are details of Beethoven s apprenticeship under Haydn s tutelage, during which a guarded mutual courtesy failed to hide a seething mutual impatience. Here is Haydn in his pathetic old age, suffering a kind of torture inflicted by the body on the brain ... Here is a long, elaborate description of Beethoven s first outright masterpiece, the Funeral Cantata For Joseph II, which could well have given Haydn some ideas for certain passages in the latter s oratorio The Creation, although Morris... * Classical music Oct 4, 2009
My English heart gave a quite unjustified leap of pride when I read that Haydn got the idea of writing The Creation (Die Schopfung) after hearing Handels Messiah in Londons Westminster Abbey ... The Chernobyl disaster had happened two months before this was recorded, he says, and Haydns masterpiece reminds us like nothing else of the beauty and wonder of a world were on the brink of destroying ... But what need had Haydn of doctrine. (Taipei Times, Taiwan -- World Business)

Classical music: Historical feast Aug 20, 2009
Rather, musical works and stylistic movements are presented in context so that, for example, the origins of the dynamic, dramatic style of Mozart and Haydn are shown to lie in Italian opera buffa rather than in the architecturally static idiom of Bach and Handel. Second, and despite the sense of flying through the terrain at breakneck speed, the level of detail remains high, with extended commentaries on individual works that show how they were originally conceived and understood. A (too?) comfortable day of dance at Tanglewood Aug 8, 2009
Each half started off with an older work, beginning with A Lake (1991), set to Haydn s Horn Concerto No. 2. This is an innocent peasant pastoral with dancers circling, tumbling, and parading, often in an old variant of ballet s third position, with a single arm in the air. (Boston Globe)

Anniversary nod to Haydn opens Bach fest Jun 29, 2009
Only half the hall had sold before Friday's opening concert of Franz Joseph Haydn's choral masterpiece, "The Creation." It was the same in Portland, where the festival traveled to perform "The Creation" at Schnitzer Hall on Saturday. Granted, Haydn isn't Bach, a more popular choice of composer for opening night, but the economy must be a factor this year ... Still, Haydn, who died 200 years ago, was a natural choice for a festival that specializes in large choral works. (OregonLive, OR -- Living)

Pianist keys on composers who mixed things up Apr 29, 2009
Three French tributes to Joseph Haydn written for the 1909 centennial of his death diverged. Maurice Ravel's "Menuet sur le nom de Haydn" is paradoxically lush and self-effacing; Chi captured its soft-edged reticence ... Music review: Dramatic concerto from Adès Apr 4, 2009
The remainder of Wednesday's short program (just 90 minutes with intermission) was devoted to symphonies by Haydn and Mozart, done in powerful, vivid performances that confirmed the wisdom of this plan.
