BSO celebrates birthdays, Debussy Nov 20, 2009
The muted strings produced a kind of drifting sonic mist, the woodwind shading was elegant and understated, and Robert Sheena s English horn solo lent a noted glow to this orchestral skyscape. In the second movement, Fetes ( Festivals ), some virtuosically quiet trumpet playing helped create the desired illusion of revelers approaching from the distance, and in Sirenes ( Sirens ) the women of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus sang alluringly off-stage, pulling at least one man briefly out of his... Rachmaninoff's 'Bells' rock Davies Hall Nov 10, 2009
Russ deLuna began the movement with a sumptuous and ardent English horn solo, and bass Mikhail Petrenko sang with fierce nobility. The Symphony Chorus, led by Ragnar Bohlin, sounded a bit shaky in the opening movement but soon found its footing. (San Francisco Chronicle -- Entertainment)

BSO opens season by honoring one of its own Sep 25, 2009
James Levine was on the podium, looking energetic as he led a spacious and tonally generous account of Berlioz s Roman Carnival Overture, with Robert Sheena floating a poised English horn solo and the brass section erupting with some fiercely festive volleys in the final pages of the score. Kissin first made his name with the Chopin piano concertos, and they still flow effortlessly from his fingers, at least judging by Wednesday night s technically brilliant account of Piano Concerto No. 2. Reconstructing the '49 score 'South Pacific' score Sep 20, 2009
"All the English horn parts had been removed and given to the second trumpet," says Pomahac, a pianist and arranger whose great-great-grandfather was a Bohemian violin-maker. "We couldn't figure out why. The oboe player from the original production told us that when the show went on the road, the oboe had to double on English horn. And they didn't always find a reliable English horn. So it was easier to give the part to a second trumpet with a mute. It didn't sound as good, but that's what they... • With season of free concerts, Sun Valley marks symphony's quarter-century Jul 31, 2009
"And it's fun to try to distinguish the different instruments - like the difference between the English horn and an oboe.". Former board president Harriet Parker-Bass says the symphony owes a great deal of credit to Eberl, a professional musician who performed with Leonard Bernstein and Frank Sinatra before pursuing his dream of creating a high-caliber orchestral music festival in Sun Valley that would be free to everyone. Microtonal marks 20 years with several premieres May 13, 2009
Alain Bancquart's "Duettino" (a premiere), a tortoise-and-hare dialogue - Elizabeth England's serene English horn overtaking Russell's voluble cello - glinted with bright modernist clarity. Maneri's son Mat, upholding the family's avant-garde excellence, offered an engrossing, ruminative viola improvisation of contrasting reticence, the compressed intervals like hesitant emotions. From broken-hearted grief to Brazilian bacchanal May 5, 2009
Guest concertmaster Dale Barltrop's solo turns were also richly musical, and English horn player Beth Orson made the most of a wide-leaping expressive solo in a piece by Jeffrey Ryan. There were moments, however, when I felt that the bass end of the orchestra lacked the definition or the presence to really drive the performance. (Globe and Mail -- Entertainment)
A John Heiss composition speaks to - not down to - children Mar 27, 2009
That's just what Heiss has done in the new version of the "Three Songs." The original piano accompaniment is now scored for an unusual ensemble of string quartet, double bass, oboe d'amore, and English horn. The larger forces allowed him to clarify and expand the instrumental counterpoint and create an especially rich timbre from the juxtaposition of the strings with the children's voices. (Boston Globe)
